Hi, I've got a medium plecostomus algae eater (though he's hardly medium anymore) and he's developed this habit of jumping from the tank. Would a larger tank remedy this situation? He's currently in a 10 gallon tank and is probably close to 5 inches long.

Thanks!

Well is it a Pleco or a Chinese Algea eater. If its and CAE if i would open the lid he would probably jump out. Yes i would move him into a different tank if you have one. If he is alone in the 10 gallon you could probably keep him in there but close the tank lid.

first of all, move him, he's much to big for a ten gallon, even if hes all by himself, and he's probably going to get bigger (is it a common pleco?). second, i've read that plecos are one fish that can and quite often will find their way out little openings in the hood even. so even though you may have a hood on the tank, if you have a plec you should close up any gaps, even smallish ones..........

A cover or lid is definately a must for plecos of that size. You wouldnt want to risk another jumping pleco that ends up dead on your floor?

plecs jump out when they want more space, bigger tank is reccommended.

By chinese algae eater do you mean false flying fox or hillstream loach? I never know which ones people mean.

I certainly don't agree that he could be kept in this tank on his own. I have a 10US hospital tank and it's 18" long, a grown common (if he is that) would not have any room in that. It's not unusualy for them to get to 15", and that's not including tail.

He needs way more room. You'll need to find out if he is a common as if he is he'll get to about 12"+. If he's not then he could well be a smaller species of plec and this is his full grown size.

It's not just a case of getting a lid, the plec is obviously unhappy in th current set-up.

my plec is in a 10 gallon right now hes like 3-4 inches i think and he goes to the top for air every now and then but i dont really think he jumps... or is that the thing you guys meant by jumping
I think it's actually jumping from the tank that is being discussed here. What kind of plec do you have? Do you have any other plans for it other than the 10gallon? What's in with it?

Sorry for all the questions!! Sorry, I know you are not even asking anything!
