Jumping Danio Again

Hi all

As some of u probably know i've had a problem with my danio's jumping out the tank.Another one jumped out this morning when i opened the lid to feed him and he went under the side board. He looks a bit bruided and blood stained fins etc but he's swimming ok. I've put some tetra general tonic in the tank. Will he be ok?

It could swing both ways, danios are incredibly hardy fish, ive seen hundreds of fish jump out of a tank and still been fine, just as long as they are quickly put back in. The fins should heal relatively quickly. But its anyones guess really sometimes that stress and damage is a little too much.

I guess all you can do is keep the water clean and keep an eye on it.

Is your tank still the same one in your sig?

What do you have in there apart from danios?

i have 4 guppys, 4 danios, 2 pepper corrys and a tiny albino BN. Thanks for your help and advise so far peeps !! And yes, it is the tank in my sig

I think you need some more cover in the tank, a bushy plant or two, a cave for the plec.

It's a shame they keep jumping out. But like in your last topic, I still think it's a lack of enough space for them. They're very active, fast swimmers!

Also your peppered corys need to be in groups, two isn't enough. I dont think your tank is big enough for the recommended minimum of 6, but adding one more would be a start.

I have more plants in the tank now and a rock which the BN sits behind. I will consider getting one more corry but i have often had small tanks where space has been an issue and only kept two corrys in them and have always done well !

Oh no, not another one!

Ant, for the sake of the Danios, can you not look out for a killer deal on Ebay for a long tank, at least 3 but ideally 4-foot? There are loads of auctions round our neck of the woods!

Failing that, rehome those remaining ones and get a more suitable stocking for your 2-footer?

A good covering of floating plants like Canadian Pondweed might settle them a little, but there is no going away from they need a longer tank.

Done well in what sense? didn't die? they are naturally shoaling fish which live in huge groups in the wild, not pairs. we can never replicate these huge numbers in the average aquarium but can try to give them a sense of being in a group. if you want to keep small tanks, fine, but there are other fish more suitable for them than two corys and some danios.

They did well as in ate well, grew as big as i've seen corry's grow and live a really long time !!

I don't want to keep small tanks but at the moment have no option as i'm staying with a family member. When i move i will get a much larger tank.
I have a plan to move my fish around once i get a lid sorted for my bigger tank.

As a short term thing, you could use a "roof" of condensation trays for this bigger tank, I bought 5 trays measuring 60x30cm for less than £10 on Ebay last year for my 5-footer.


If loaning you a condensation tray or two while you order your own will get you to upgrade to this bigger tank, I'm more than happy for you to borrow some. I live in Bitterne and work in Shirley, so you cannot be that far away during my normal working week routine.

The bigger tank is'nt much bigger. Maybe 2 foot in length about 25% deeper and wider than the small tank.

While ideally the danios would be in a larger shoal as well, I don't think more of them is the answer in this case, as they already need more room.
