I have realised today that my filter isnt pumping out water so much as it was. If the fish got in the path of the flow coming out they would go flying but now its nothing like that, i have had the tank a couple of months. Is this a sign the sponges need changing? and also which ones do I change?

Or this is a sign its packing up

Thanks

Yeah i cleaned it all last week, just given it another clean now so see if that solves it. Do you know how often the sponges need to be replaced?

I have a jewell and its been running for 5 eeks-now i have a similar problem?
I thought you left all of the filter for a few months to develop the bacteria........do you change the small white filter on the top on a regular basis?

thanks

change the floss every week. (dont buy juwel, buy some in a bag and use what you need.)

get rid of the black (carbon) and green (nitrate) sponge as theyre useless. and replace them with blue sponges. then slowly change the blue sponges in the bottom section for ceramics as they flow better.

I kept my Green Nitrate sponge but washed it in hot water as it can be used for your A&Nbacs I have removed the carbon as it is a waste of space, I am not tight but I wash the White floss a couple of times before replacing - as they do collapse after a few washes.

I did buy the Jewel ceramic basket (cant remember the name) it seems to have helped the speed of my cycle too.

Paul.

With Juwel filters, the floss needs replacing Weekly IME for any reasonably well stocked tank. I replaced the carbon with a caurse blue sponge. After this, I was done (no nitrate sponge in my system, so diden't need to replace it...).

Change the floss, but NEVER wash the sponges in tap water, or replace them, unless they are litteraly falling appart. Use old tank water to rince them out. When the sponges do eventually fall appart, replace them one at a time, with a month between replacements :good:

All the best

I absolutely agree with Rabbut. I just want to add to give you an idea of how often your sponges should need changed, I have a Fluval filter which I've had for 8 years and it still has the original sponges. They're still going strong too.

It's actually very important not to change the sponges unnecessarily, as every time you change a sponge, you are throwing away some of your beneficial bacteria.

BTT :good:

Thanks for all your help :good:

I washed the floss which made the flow much better. I'll buy a blue sponge to replace the carbon at some point and leave it then (appart from washing it out )

Agree with all the above advice and would like to add about establishing your filter maintenance habits:

We often recommend starting with a one-month interval for squeezing the excess debris out of the sponges and/or swishing the gunk out of the ceramic or other hard media. That's just a starting point and then you should adjust the interval downward or upward depending on results. If you get a flow slowdown before a month then adjust downward, say to 3 weeks, or if you find hardly any excess debris you could possibly adjust upward although a lot of aquarists think the one-month mark would be good anyway.

So the the typical core tank maintenance routine for a month would start out as a gravel-clean-water-change each weekend and on the last weekend of the month you would clean the filter (always cleaning the media in tank water of course) in the middle of the water change.
