Hey everyone. A local college here has been doing a study on diet involving jewel cichlids. In a nut shell they are trying soy based foods, instead of I believe fish meal. Either way, they are rehoming over 200 cichlids and I may be adopting one. I told the lady I wanted a female and she sent me a picture of a very brightly colored fish. Are females normally more brightly colored than the males? Thanks!

Jewel cichlids are quite hard to sex. The females are as bright as the males. You need to take a close look at the 'corners' of the dorsal and anal fins; in males those will be pointed, while in females they'll be rounded.

There's no difference in aggression between the sexes; they both just as bad as each other...

Just checking; you're not going to put it in your five gallon with your phantoms, are you?
