Hi all,

Was at the LFS yesterday and noticed two kinds of jewel cichlids with minor differences. One strand seem to have a shiney patch on their cheeks and then spoted over the rest of the body whereas the other strand had shiney spots everywhere, even on the cheeks.

I personally liked the ones with the patch on their cheek and the man at the store told me that this was a 'higher quality jewel'. Is this correct? What is the proper look for jewel cichlids, patch or no patch?

Thanks again!

Hi I have a breeding pair of them and mine have the 3 black spots down the body
And they have a nice shiny silver and blue specles down their entire body,
Iv not heard of their being an upgraded jewel cichlid!

They aren't a "higher quality" Jewel. There are two different kind's. The regular red one's, and the one's with shiny scales over their whole body( Called a Turquoise Jewel ). Here is a pic of a pair I had a while ago( both are regulart ):

I did have a Turquoise at one time, but I can't find his picture! They are absolutely stunning!

I also have two red jewel cichlids.
The thing I like about red ones, they can change there colors.
From pale when there not so happy, and deep red when they want to breed.
However I must warn you, if you end up getting a pair be careful if you put them in a tank with other fish.
They become very agressive.

Hi all thanks for the replys.

So it is the turquoise jewels that I am refering too, and the LFS had I guess two different strands of them.

http://www.elmersaquarium.com/image_fish/0...l_turquoise.jpg

Both had shiney scales over the entire body but one strand has these shiney scales uniform over the whole body and cheek whereas the other had uniform shiney scales over the body and more of a patch of shiney scales on the cheek.

I guess I'm just wondering if it is normal for the turquoise jewel to have a patch of shiney scales on their cheek or if they are just suppose to have spots all over their bodies.

Appreciate the help ocne again.

Ya it was just the first one I found off google images. Thanks for the help! Lovely fish they are though!
