my jd has decided all that it will eat is frozen cubes but i dont have any at the moment but i dont just want to feed it that what other things is there that it wotn turn its nose up at ???

How long hasn't it eaten for? I wouldn't be too worried if its a day or so.

Check the water stats and if everything is fin, theres no aggression from other fish or anything like then my guess is its just being picky.

Earthworms, give them a quick wash, cut them up depending on his size. Or Meal worms if you dont fancy diggin in the garden.

water stats are all at 0 ammonia nitrite and nitrate no the only aggression is what it gives out it is being picky but i am wondering what it cant turn its nose up at i think it is at the age where i should start feeding it live food...i was thinking of going to a reptile shop and buying some small crickets. it will eat prawns when i feed them and frozen food but flakes pellets and dried bloodworm it wont touch. it is 4" now so he is big enough i was wondering if any one has any more ideas of what i could feed him as an everyday food

my mate feeds his cichlids meal worms and they all love them where is the bets place to get them from and would they be live or dried

They would be live and you can get them from most fishing tackle shops I guess, or one of my LFS sells them as they also sell reptiles.

i migth have a look round then at weekend also are tetra doromin sticks any good ?

Not used tetra doromin, but I can recommend hikari pellets as a good staple.

You can get mealworms from most reptile shops, its where I used to get mine (as well as crickets).

he doesnt do hikari pellets turns his nose up at them all i have seen him eat is frozen food(cubes), live bloodworm, live daphnia and prawn i think i will buy some crickets and meal worms at weekend

I think he's just been picky, shouldn't be too hard to get them to eat pellet food and will be good for long term health. You might have to starve them for a few days, but I think I remember reading your JD was 4" correct? If so I wouldn't be worried about not feeding for up to a week.

It would be good to get him onto some good pellets, live/frozens arent the greatest without some kind of staple diet of something else, if he doesnt eat for a week or so to get him onto some, then it wont hurt him, I use tetra doromin on my tex, as he too refused to eat the hikari pellets, he loves them and I use it as his main food, with frozen foods for treats.

right well i wont feed them till the weekend then i will go get some meal worms, doromin sticks and then try him with the hikari pellets i have eventually he should get used to them also whats the average size of a JD as i think its around 9" i dont know

Males can reach 10", sometimes more, females smaller. But 8-9" is a more common size.

do you have a wilkinson near to you?
if yes go to the pet and garden section, look for the wild bird feed,,,they have large tubs of dried mealworms exp 2010......my snakeheads<all they will eat> and all the others go crazy for them and at 3pounds it a good bargain.........

best thing to do is stock up on atleast three different types of pellets feeding them all togther at 1st ten rotate so if a shop stops selling your desired pellets as mine has you wont be up the creak..........obviously also carry on with the frozen pellets.......

yea i have a wilkinsons near me but i detest going in there as i was sacked unfairly from there not to long ago i now work at pets at home :p but i know what you are on about i used to do the pets section all the time i will get some this weekend and do you use tetra doromin sticks ?
