I know they say no live plants for jack dempsey's but how would some java moss work for some color

You could also try Java fern , or anubias , you can let them float in the tank , or try tyeing them to a rock , piece wood , or even pvc pipe .

Most medium and large cichlids have their own ideas about where anything they can move will go in the tank .......these plants will live , even grow just floating in the water column ......not sure if Jacks will eat them though , stopped keeping them before I tried live plants of any kind .......when I tried artificial plants , they would be found floating sooner more often than later .

Java Moss is good: The JD won't eat it, it's easy to grow, and it's tough enough to survive if the fish redecorates. It's certainly worth a try.

You could try it but if the JD decides to rearrange its decorations you could end up with a bunch of java moss in your filter system. I tried some java moss in my cichlid community tank (juvenile severums, a convict and a female firemouth) and I was picking it out of my filter tubes for a couple months afterwards...
