My Java moss refuses to grow. It's still alive (barely), there are the moss "stems" present but none of the tiny leaves. I've witnessed my 2 SAEs being very active in the moss but just assumed there was some algae in there. I've come to the conclusion that they've just been having a moss meal instead!

Anyone else experienced similar? Do I have to choose between moss and SAE?

hmm are SAE known to nibble at plants ? the only reason that my moss does not grow is because of warm temps... i doubt you are experiencing that problem :) .... Ive never read on SAE's nibbling on plants... hmmm interesting

I've heard they can once fully grown, which mine are now. There's very little or no algae in my tank and the tetras soon gobble up their food leaving very little leftovers. I expect there just hungry and the moss is the next best thing.

Ive 5 full grown sae in my tank , and they do have a go at the moss now and then. Try supplementing their diet with some cucumber, mine go nuts for it. All i do is cut a chunk split it in half and take the seeds out(they make a mess). I made a holder out of a suction cup and a hook so you can stick it on the side of your tank, mind just as easy to wedge under some bogwood.

Neat idea. Cheers mate.

Have you tried feeding algae wafers at night after lights out? The tetra wont find it, and the SAEs should be able to dine in peace!
