I went to the lfs this weekend to pick up some plants. I wanted some java moss to attach to my drift wood. When I asked if they had it, the guy told me that it was illegal to have. Is this true?

Thanks,
Karl

LOL it isn't illeagl here, but the guy at the LFS i now goto told me it's very expenisive becuase they have to remove every snail and egg from it and it's very time consuming. Maybe they don't want to sell it for that reason so the guy was just making stuff up.

yea, my lfs has even told me that it is illegal for them to sell apple and ramshorn snails too. why do they outlaw the most benign of species while some killers are still out there

*note* i am serious my lfs said they couldn't even order them and asked if we still had ours alive because they couldn't order anymore.

It just happens to be legal in Michigan :) maybe you can take a Java Moss road trip lol

illegal for what reason?

if this was a response to my post i am assuming the same as George Farmer said about foreign plants. apple and ramshorn snails reproduce liek crazy and the ytoo could probably reek havok on an ecosystem as well.

but idk, i ahve osme and you can still easily get some by ordering some online or something. they don't check that carefully... at least i live in NY so they probably are to busy with more important matters to worry about importation of the scary killer snails lol... sorry wasn't meant to be funny.

I don't know where you are at in Ohio Kombat....but I just bought what was labeled as java moss at Something Fishy on State Rd in Cleveland. I am not a plant guru, so admittedly, he could be wrong....but having heard it grows well in low light conditions had been looking for it, when I saw it I asked if it was java moss, he said yes and it was only $.95 for a betta sized cup.
