No... the JD's that we get in the shops are Rocio octofasciata (Regan, 1903), formerly Nandopsis octofasciatum and Cichlasoma octofasciatum.

They come in black or sandy colours and there is a Electric Blue form that may or may not be a hybrid.

That is the only Rocio in the aquarium trade.

They are a large predatory Central American Cichlid that is pretty shy 9/10.

If you have had one that is different, then you are the 1/10 as most of us who have kept these fish before find them skittish and shy.

I know I have a JD if I take a picture would you like to correctly id the species? Are you capable of distinguishing between your true Jd and a fake? LOL you probably never owned one! Reading information on the net gives a good idea but experience give a lot more!

i'd take one of my 4" boy but hes hiding in a pot at the back of the tank and the bow front makes it impossible to get a picture.

Mine was really timid , definatly not agressive. The majority of people think it's agressive havent owned one.

haha aint been on in awhile but had fun reading this :D

Well in my exsperience with cichlids and lord ive owned my fair share,"I" found the jack dempsey to be very placid in comparason with other cichlids....It has alot to do with what type of fish you keep others with and the size of the tank...My jack dempsey was a very peaceful cichlid, ended up getting terrorised in my tank,so i gave it to my sister, she had it in a four foot tank with a bristlenose plec and two keyhole cichlids...even then it would hang very close to its little cave, being very shy, Then ive also had oscars that got on with anything, now the small 5inch oscar i have is pure evil attacking fish nearly three times its size, and aggressive fish of that, so for anyone to say either "no there evil" or the soft is really a personal exsperience, thing with cichlids is there attitudes are very different from each other, i could mirror my old set up and it would work fine, wilst the same set up in another tank would end in mayhem,
