do jack dempseys usually take flakes, put them in their mouths and then spit it out again?

yes as most cichlid's, take the food into the mouth and 90% come's straight out the gill's...there messy little tyke's
probally find a good quality pellet like red hiraki is much better for them, you get small/medium/large pellet's
