I am aware that jack dempseys get pretty large, but I don't know exactly what I can put in my 36 gallon. I know that a 36 gal. isn't such a big tank but I need some help figuring what I can put in it (I'm ready to move on to more intersting fish). I currently have livebearers in my 36 gallon, but I wanted to put some cichlids or some Synodontus catfish (spotted semi- aggressive catfish) in it. I was wondering if you can mix semi aggressive cat fish and a jack dempsey cichlid together (that is if I have any room for that, it's your adivce that will determine my decision). The tank has been up and running for a year and a few months now. Please, any advice will help. :D

Jack Dempseys will get too large for a 36 gallon, same with most catfish. Are you interested in getting any type of semi-aggressive fish or just a semi-aggressive cichid?

I'm interested in making a semi- aggressive tank.....I can do without the jack dempsey, but I really like the synodontis eupterus catfish... they get big though. :( I love them sooooo much! Some people on the forum were saying that they can live in a 30-40 gallon.I was thinking that if thats true I would put the catfish and some gold gouramis and other semi aggressive fish, but not crowding it.

Almost any fish Can live in a tank that's to small for awhile. Notice I said for awhile. May not live as long of life as it could. Also, it's a matter of it being moral/ethical.

Also, aren't Jack demps South American cichlids? This is the African section :)

As for Africans in a 36g, go with Lake Tanganyikans.

im making an amazon biotope with exodon's......getting a nice shoal of them...they get to about4" and look great in a shoal...also they are an agressive fish, apparently they act like little piranhas....lots of attitude...just dont put anything else with them...they are notorious scale eaters! so mines a species tank with a few BN at the bottom!

Ooops. Yeah I am in the wrong section....not too familiar with cichlids....
Yeah I guess your right about being moral...
maybe I'll work on my parents and convince them that I can do without my desk so I can have one more tank, maybe 55+. :) It will be a challenge convincing them. Thank you all who replied to my post even thopugh it was in the wrong section. :)
