Unfortunately i've just found my blue dwarf gourami dead in my tank. He was in my community tank with 4 bronze corys, 5 zebra danios, 2 bolivian rams, and another dwarf gourami. A week ago i noticed he'd got what looked like wounds in near enough the same place either side of him. I put this down to my other gourami being a bit too aggressive, as i'd noticed him going after my betta, and the now dead gourami. Fortunately i'd moved my Betta into his own tank, and treated my community tank with Melafix.

Do they need to be kept in pairs? or will i be okay with having just the one, as i dont want to get another one and him end up the same way?

Yeah he'll be fine on his own, did you have two males together?
Love gouramis, gorgeous under-rated fish, but i think dwarves are basically devil-spawn with fins....

Did the wounds look like holes, or ulcers? Because in that case it was not agression, but a disease for which dwarfs are exceptionally vulnerable. Several of us on this forum have lost dwarfs to this disease. In that case you should disinfect your tank, otherwise your other gourami might get it too, as it is a disease caused by virus/bacteria.

What biulu said!
If it is DGIV theres a link to some more informative links on DGIV in my sig....

I only have one fish which i can sex....and thats my male betta :p Its something i really can't do. So i dunno if it was two males.

I agree, they are little devils.

The gourami had what to me like a logish open wound. Don't think it was an ulcer. It'd been like that for a week, and i was hoping it would heal, and the other gourami is doing really well...even if he/she can't work out where his/her friend has gone.

I am almost certain it was the disease, from the explanation of the wound. Please disinfect your tank, and read Germ's thread. As said, the colourful gouramis are the males, females are more white/silver colour with ocassionally colour rays.
