With all the bad press (and from experience) that workers at LFS get, its always nice to see it when they do something really right. This is a quick description of the conversation (I eves dropped on in the LFS) last Monday. I was minding my own business have a quick look through the cichlid section, when a mother and her two kids came into the fish holding area. The kids where all very excited and oooo’d and awadddd at all the different types of fish, while the mother seemed a little more reserved. After about 10 minutes or so the family decided on 5 guppies. She asked the LFS guy if she could have them and he set about bagging the fish. With the fish bagged, they all stated making their way to the check out. It was at the point that the LFS stopped in his tracks.
“What type of tank are these fish going into”, asked the LFSW
To which the mother replied, “20 gallon”.
“What else is in the tank” said the LFSW
“Nothing” replied the mother; “we only put the water in it yesterday”.
“I’m sorry to have to tell you this but if you put these fish into the tank now they are most likely going to suffer and die”, said the LFSW
The worker then took the bag back from the kids unwrapped the insulation and replaced the fish. He then began to quiz the mother if she had used any declorinator, with the water “no”, did she have a test kit, “What’s a test kit?”.
He then spent the next half an hour explaining how to prepare and care for her guppies. In the end she bought a small beginners aquarium book and a bottle of stress coat.
It’s nice when someone takes the time to explain and educate people on what to do right. (Also in the long run he stands to make more profit and she has to come back and buy fish)
Then again there is another guy in the same shop “who would try and convince you that goldfish and rabbits can live happily in a community tank together
