Why not use sand ??? Argos play sand is only £2.49 for a 15Kg bag, may work out a fair bit cheaper and good for species that like to dig for food.

have to admit i like sand only questions are is it any good for plants and how about keeping it clean? guessing gravel vac would be no good?

i find it great for plants, i have a med planted tank, no other substrait than the sand (plant food base) , just put the plants into the sand and they have set roots, i maybe use a bit of plant food every once a month, but to be honest pants are growing and living well.

i also use a gravel vac to keep cleaan its simple, just need to hold the vac tube 1-2 cm from the sand and it picks up the waste and leaves the sand where it is.

you do see a little bit more waste with sand than gravel but thats only as there are no nooks an crannies for the waste to fall into but then again you know when you do a vac you have got every bit or waste there so will help with water peramiters.

Having said that my tanks dont need more cleaning / vacing than when i used gravel.

you lso have the added bonus of seeing the fish scavanging in the sand and some fish are great landscapers and can be funny to watch them move the sand around a little

some little pics of my tank (close ups) with the sand int he background.
