Is this wood safe?

It's kind of hard to identify a wood unless we study Botany.

Perhaps when I visit the fish store again this week, I will try to look for any similar wood.

I think when you want to use it, you must use it with caution as what Byron mentioned about his experience.
Observe your fish when you put it into your tank.
For what signs should I look out for when I put the wood in?
 
I think look for any fish that is breathing fast / gasping for breath, which mean there is poisoning in water from the wood.
 
I am at the fish stores now...

I can not help you, as I cant see it in person. My best guess is spider wood or grape vine.
