Hello I have a 55 gallon that I was wanting advice on how many fish could I put in there I do not want to over crowd the tank. First I am forsure putting two African Dwarf frogs in there and I have reseached the fish that would be ok to go in with them but I was wanting suggestion's on if what I had in mind would be too many or not. So beside's the two frogs I was going to put 6 zebra danio's , 4 neon tetra, and 1 ghost shrimp and maybe one otto cat algae eater would that be too many for a 55 gallon??? I know all of them stay pretty small I would appreciate any advice that anyone has. Thanks!

The general rule of thumb with fish stocking is 1" of fish per gallon of water. I personally use a ratio of 2"/gal. just to be safe. It's always best to consider the adult size of the fish when making the calculations.

With those plans you would have 10 small fish in your tank which would just be pointless you would not see them and the schools are so small that the fish would not be that happy, the stock you have worked out is more for a 10 gallon tank. Straight away I would recommend getting more of everything so you would have 10 neon tetras, 10 danios and 10 shrimp, your frogs would be fine in the pair and then with the ottos if you really want them get a group of 5-7 or get a smallish growing plec in a 55 you could get something like a bristlenose or inspector plec L102. And then you are able to choose some feature fish and bottom dwellers which ever you want really. Do you have any ideas of fish you like?

With the inch per gallon rule that mtv8 mentioned, the inch per gallon rule is rubbish in about 70% of instances and why you would limit your self to 2 inch per gallon for your main tank or only tank is beyond me because all that means is that you will have less fish and while fish will have more room in lower numbers they are missing out and you are missing out.

There must be more fish you want than just neon tetras and zebra danios?

Wills is right you could have so much more in there

Your stocking idea is ok for now but why not substitute Harlequin raspboras for the zebras, they are more colourful and will look nice against plants such as vallis. and then as Wills said why not go for 12 or so neons.
tetras look so much better in a larger group.

Otos can be a little tricky to keep I believe so why not substitute them for a smaller plec like a clown plec and get a small shoal of corydoras catfish. They're very active and little characters.

as your tank will be full of small fish I would personaly add to that group a pair of gouramis maybe pearl gouramis who would flourish in a quiet fish tank like that

2"/gal is not half of 1"/gal it is double. 1"/2gal is half of 1"/gal.

ie. 2"/gal means im keeping twice the amount of fish than the standard rule whereas 1"/2gal means im keeping half the amount of fish than the standard rule

No need to worry Jeep, you've got plenty of space to play with!

It's good that you are keeping the Danio's in a 55 gallon as they need plenty of space for their active behaviour. For now, you could up your shoals or introduce a new shoal of Tetra? Introduce some Livebearers? Or buy yourself a centrepiece fish like a Gourami? Then you can consider adding even more fish once they have settled in!

James.

Thank you everybody for all your advice it is nice to know that I am not going to be crowding the tank, I would like to add a few more so I will plan on it.
