Hi there i took the advice on the forum and i'm gonna start cycling my tank! Lol according to the fish shops they say that ammonia kills your fish! Ah yes this is true and he said this isn't even the right product..hmm can u confirm the lfs guys bull#### and prove this is the right product for cycling my tank?

Got it from boots for £1.75 Household Ammonia(cleaning and laundry aid?) btw it stinks like hell! it leaked in the bag a bit and i accidently gave it a sniff Lol anyway is this it:

So after reading the cycling instructions i think i'll put this stuff in. Also bought a plant today, however should i do without it?

provided that is pure ammonia and has not had anything else added to it, yes it can be used to cycle a tank

don't use it if it dosn't say 100% pure ammonia

Thats the one I got, saw a pic of it somewhere on here. I made the mistake of giving it a sniff too.. didn't think I'd be much worse than hair dye Ha! how wrong I was lol

My cycle seems to be going well so far with it. Ammonia dropped and Nitrites started showing after 6 days.

The ingredients should read: ammonia, water, and chelating agent
or something that that effect. If you shake the bottle of ammonia and it foams DON'T use it. If it just forms little air bubbles that burst shortly after then it's fine.

You're right it smells awful! Pretty much the same as smelling salts, which is ammonium carbonate, they used to be used to wake people who fainted, by causing a reflex action in the mucous membranes of the nose and lungs!

Btw one question: i bought a plant and some driftwood to add to my tank.. I think i should add them after the cycling. Good idea?

The fish shops probably think you have fish in your tank and youre going to pour ammonia in lol.

Thats the same stuff im using Dave.

Lym, i just started yesterday, added the correct amount of ammonia at 9pm. Iv just did a nitrite test out of curiosity (pointless) and of course the result was 0 ppm. Need to test Ammonia level at 9pm.

PS. Im cycling with the bogwood and plants in my tank. One of my plants looks kinda like its dieing, however the other looks fine and healthy. But my bogwoods looking okay. I heard its fine to cycle with them in the tank, i also heard that the plants take in some of the nitrate/nitrite (not sure which), anyone confirm this?

Probably a good idea to leave the bogwood in there because the bacteria can attach to it, which makes your tank better at dealing with fish poop, along with your filter and gravel etc. But im a newbie, im just going on what others have told me, if im wrong someone please do say so, id hate to give out incorrect advice

Pour a little bit into the lid then use the medicine dropper or whatever youve decided. Thats the way i did it, id dare not pour ammonia into a drinking glass or anything LOL! With the excess left in the cap, i just chucked it down the toilet.

Be patient with the ammonia, it pee'd me off. I started adding 2 drops, then 4, then 8, then 12, then 20, then 26, then 40 (in total). I eventually got there in the end.
