Is This Tank Too Small?

Hello...

Just joined :)

Won a fish at the fair so I went out and bought a starter tank.

I would like to get another goldfish to join the one I bought but was wondering if this tank is too small?

I know it is 10L but dont know the width.

Please check it out http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/part...EFISH+TANKS.htm

Thanks
the tank is to small for 1 let alone 2 they need a mine of 30g for one and a fillter so unless you can gett a bigger taank soon i would get red of it

Its a very strange thing but the world of giving away goldfish and having goldfish in little bowls and such has just kept going and going for decades and decades and it has absolutely nothing to do with the fishkeeping hobby!

A goldfish is a carp which in most cases can grow to an enormous size. The minimum tank size for a single goldfish is a huge 30 US gallon tank (114 liter UK) and another 10 US gallons needs to be added for each additional goldfish.

Added to that they are a fish that eats a lot and makes a lot of mess and so require extra filtration and tend to disturb some of the gravel and plants often picture having.

It would be a huge win for you if you decided and could find a local fish shop to take this off your hands or a person with a pond (which is where they really belong.) (Although don't mean to discourage you if you really wanted to go 30 gallons, but usually people had no plans like that!) Then you could change your plans for perhaps one or two very small fish and some plants and really start to learn some things about this great hobby!

Anyway there are great members here who will like chatting with you about ideas and have many good suggestions!

But in the instructions I have it says one fish per 4.5 lires.
And I only have two goldfish in the tank........................

Please ignore the instructions - they are there to sell the bowl not to help the fish be healthy.

2 Goldies in there is asking for them to die. 10l is tiny.

I'm not saying this to be awful to you, I just think you need to be aware of this as you are responsible for 2 living creatures.

Yes, all these things are basically just shams, the bowls, the intstructions, the conditions under which the animals are held before sales. Unfortunately there are a lot of situations around the world where live animals are used as part of cheap money-making schemes, kind of like plastic doo-dads at fairs and such. Its done with little turtles and betta fish in plastic cups and the members here could probably cite many more.

You've stumbled across a web site/forum here that brings together many fish hobbyists, some of whom have spent their lives keeping many types of fish and stowing up knowledge of all sorts of aspects of the hobby. Its a bit of a jolt compared to getting a fish at the fair, but its an opportunity! This is a wonderful hobby and you've now got a foot in the door!

very good post WD, agree 100% :)

it might say one fish per 4.5 litres, but which species of fish? Goldfish definately get too big for that, a google images search would confirm that :)

when i was about 12 i won some goldfish two i new i couldnt keep them in a small plastic cheap bowl so i give them to my next door who has a pond now the gold fish are 12 inch long, your asking for trouble if they go in a small 10l tank they will die after a couple of months

A common goldfish can easily grow to 16 inches long in its first year if given the right food and room to grow, sugar babe. Unfortunately the small tank that you have will not be enough for your fish for very long. As WD said, the choices are to find a nice pond to put the goldfish into, buy a much bigger tank for your present goldfish or give the goldfish to someone who can provide them the room that they need. There are some very small fish that would work fine in your little tank, such as Heterandria formosa, but they are not very common fish in the hobby and are rare in a fish store. I have a few and they have a thriving colony going in a 10 gallon, 38 litre, tank. If you decide to do something like these, you could keep several in your little tank. I personally love small fish like these. They do not get to even a full inch long.

I thought they banned fish as prizes at fairs in the UK? (I am assuming pinksugababe69 is from the UK due to the link to Argos).

I know the fair that regularly comes to our town stopped it probably at least 5 years ago, if not a lot longer.
