I have a 40 breeder with an eheim 2213. I have been told this stocking list would be great but it appears overstocked to me.

2x Rainbow Cichlid
2x Keyhole Cichlid
2x Bolivian Ram
6x Peppered Corys
1x Porthole Catfish
1x Green Phantom Pleco (Maybe a leopard frog instead if I can find a good deal on the phantom)
5x Rainbow Fish (Either 5 bosemanis, 5 praecox, or a mix)

What do you think? I love this set up so I hope its not overstocked haha

40 what? I presume you mean gallons! What size is the tank inches/cm wise? Rainbows grow up to about 5 inches and really need at least a 4 foot tank to swim around in.

It is a 40 gallon breeder tank 36" by 18" by 17". These are dwarf rainbows though an only reach about 3 inches. I am not getting the bigger ones.

Sorry, just going by your original post where you said you were considering them.

Boesemani Rainbowfish are not the dwarf variety and will grow up to 5 inches and need a 4 foot tank at least.

Ok well then suppose I forgot the bosemani and just did the 5 praecox. Do you think the tank would be overstocked? Any problems with this setup?

Thanks for the input

No problem.

Also Keyholes can get up to 5 inches and Rainbow Cichlids to about 4 inches...

In a 40 gallon you should be able to keep around 40 inches of fish so calculate all your fishes adult sizes and you'll get an idea if you are overstocked or not. Looks like you are a bit to me. Personally I'd have a pair of Keyholes, Rainbow Cichlids or Rams, not all three.

Have you thought about Kribs?

I wouldn't put a frog in there but that maybe just me. Dwarf Rainbows are call so a nice shoal of these as a centre piece, some Rams or Kribs, Corys and maybe some Dwarf Gouramis. That's just me though!

Seems very overstocked to me, some of those fish get big, the Portholes get over 10cm I think, and the rainbow cichlids get over 12cm. So yeah, this isn't going to work.

Tek oot.

I have specifically picked the keyholes, rainbows, and Bolivian rams because I am doing a planted cichlid tank and these are the very few fish that will work with plants. I had thought about kribs and apistos but I am not really interested. The only reason i added rainbows was because it was suggested to me on another forum to bring out the other cichlids because they are docile and are more likely not to hide if I have other more active fish. I would get rid of the rainbow fish before anything else. Im not worried about the size of the fish because 5 inch fish in a 40 breeder is not an issue.

What about this?

2x Rainbow Cichlid
2x Keyhole Cichlid
2x Bolivian Ram
6x Peppered Corys
1x Porthole Catfish
1x Green Phantom Pleco (or leopard frog)

Don't forget stocking is not just about how many inches of fish you can have; you also have to take into account the fish's characters.

All your cichlids are going to wanting to occupy the same areas, and you don't really have room in a three foot tank for them to be able to set up separate territories, which will mean a lot of stress and/or aggression from those fish.

I think that this stock is going to end in a bit of a headache - pairing 3 cichlids in a 3 foot tank is a bit of a push. Also for your porthole I have some flagtails and dwarf hoplos that are close to them and they are best in numbers :)

I would do

2 Rainbow Cichlids
6 Dwarf Rainbows
3 Porthole Cats
1 Leopard Frog

or

2 Keyholes
2 Bolivians
6 Dwarf Rainbows
3 Porthole Cats
6 Peppered Cories
1 Leopard Frog

or

4 Bolvians
6 Dwarf Rainbows
3 Porthole Cats
6 Peppered Cories
1 Leopard Frog

For me I would go for 1 or 3 :) I find Keyholes a little boring.
