Hi folks,

currently cycling my new tank. Taken 7 days to get a nitrite spike, and everything seems to be going fine. Except......

on close inspection of the tank, there is loads, and i mean loads of debris (and increasing over the last few days), which doesnt seem to be getting drawn into the filter. The particles are very tiny and the tank looks clear from a distance, but im worried what it might be. i dont have any real plants in the tank, it is situated away in an alcove out of sunlights rech (although the lights are on for 10hrs a day). ive given a water sample to a friend for them to have a look at in the lab under the microscope, but he is a busy man, and might be some time!

and i am just about ready for fish as the cycle is almost there

can anyone explain ? is it possible that its just alge?

thanks

iain

you can get all sorts of bacteria, algae and stuff cropping up when your cycling. lots of little creatures will thrive in high ammonia or nitrite conditions so they tend to crop up, they shoudl dissapear again when the cycle's done so long as you maintain the tank properly

thank you miss wiggle

im just a tad paranoid.

i started to cycle my tank in october, but to cut a long story short, i introduced snails (via live plants ), then there were loads of planarians living the high life, as well as a few nematodes (the ones i spoted). As i had no fish etc... decided to start over.

and now this

thanks again. anything changes, i will know who to see

cheers

If there are no palnts and no fish in there yet, you don't need the light on. Leaving the lights on too long can cause algae etc. Try leaving the lights off for a few days, your water may clear. If you don't have plants the light really is just to view your fish, you will not need to run it for ten hrs a day, waste of electricity and potential to increase algae.
