Is This Carbon?

Yes it looks like carbon pellets,i had similar in my aquaflow internal.

Im not it was already in my fluval fx5, didnt realise what it was. My fish have had a lot of infections lately and the meds didnt seem to be helping, now i know why. I have taken the carbon out and am now treating the tank with protozin again at half dose because of my clown loaches. After the final dose i will run the carbon for 48 hours. Do i then remove the carbon or is it good to keep carbon in there permanently

Carbon is an extremely fine filter media which is why it's used to filter out old medication and water staining. Being a fine filter it becomes full very quickly and will start to leach the impurities back into the water. It cannot be cleaned or reused so should be discarded after a few days depending on the amount of contamination
