I was looking through the internet and came across this pic, and I was wondering if this is an some type of Arowana?

Just wondering if this fish is really that big or is that person really short.

Thats a Arapaima gigas, probably the largest purely freshwater fish in the world. They are in the same family as arowana's (Osteoglossidae) and share many of the same traits.

i think on rare ocassion they do turn up in shops which IMO is wrong, who can house a 8ft fish?

not many at all is the answer!

Probably you would end up feeding something that large chicken or rabbit carcasses as well as large slabs of fish fillets. Ouch.

...and throw in any tasty visitors who decide to tap the glass

wow, thats a HUGE fish! what a beauty!!! it sure looks like an arowanna to be, shame they killed it :-(

omg he killed it! b*stard!
They're hunted regularily by natives for food, hes feeding his family

I believe they are also commercially bred as well. Supposedly tastes pretty good, i wouldn't mind trying it.
