My tank is getting overly hot, and I can't seem to cool it down, anyone had a similar problem and know of a device or trick to cool them down? It's a 40 gallon tank.

Cheers.

I've just been on holiday over the heatwave and came back to my tank at 29 degrees. I didn't want to do anything drastic, so just opened the top up to the air and cut back on the time the lights were on (luckily none of my fish are into jumping out of the water). I also tried to keep the room cool (it doesn't get direct sun light) by opening windows etc.

Some seem to do the frozen-water-in-a-sealed-bottle trick but due to temperature fluctuations in the tank this could be more of a last resort thing...

I've tried floating ice bottles, my heaters are unpluged, I'm hitting temps well in the 30's, I've lost 2 pictus catfish and 2 figure 8 puffers. My place is fairly warm but I don't have air con.

Jeez, sorry to hear that - I must admit, it seems I was very lucky. One other thing I did was increase aeration (I've got a noisy air pump which I left running and directed the filter outlets at the surface a bit more) as soon as I realised.

Can you do a few water changes with cooler water?

Yeah, I've been doing them, as much as 50% with cool water, obviously being careful not to shock the fish. I'm freezing a couple of bottles of water at the moment, I'll stick them in in the morning and I'm gonna stick a fan blowing on it to try and help.

i think my tanked peaked at about 31 C i set a fan up blowing accross the front of the tank, set my air pump going turned the lights off completely, and left the lid off.... the temp was still a bit hight after all this but no fishy losses...

I'll have to try the lights off, is there a risk of fish jumping out with no lid on?

it depends what fish you have.....

none of mine are jumpers so no, i loked at it as... they`re more likely to die with the lack of oxygen in the water due to the heat than they are to jump out......

That's true, I might see if I can get one of those clip on desk fans.

The word is tank chiller, and there are several different kinds available, some use compressors and run chilled freaon to a heat exchanger in the tnak, others use thermoelectric components to move heat out of the water and have a heatsink and fan to blow it away, Nanotuners has several options available, aswell as drs foster and smith, also if you have a spair dorm room fridge it may work to run tubing through it t cool things off.

Think both types of chillers are quite expensive, several 100quid if my memory serves me corretly, bit much unless you're setting up a 100g marine I would have thought.

office desk fans... you know the clip on ones around about £8 on ebay. its what i use on my nano reef and my 40gal planted. :D :D you get loads of evaporation but it keep it nice and kool, so just op up every night.

Well when Fozzy_wozzy_woo was over last weekend installing my aquarium he installed a cooler system which only cost me 50 pounds so far but the whole temp system he has built for me has cost around 75 pounds.

what he did was this.

before the tank was installed we had to crawl under the floor and place in cement blocks and floor strengtheners as my tank is going to weigh around 3000KG.

but as he was under the floor he dug a hole that was a black bin deep.
he drilled holes in the bin and placed in stones in the bottom of the bin. in the bin he placed in a garden hose.
In the floor he drilled two holes and fed the hose up through the holes. in the base of the holes he placed rubber bands to hold the pipe in place. once the tank was in placed he connected the hoses to the pump that is sitting in the bio filter.

on the pump he placed a temperature on/off switch which switches on at 31 deg and switches off at 29.5

he explained to me because the temperature under the house is always cold and in the bin it is always cold as it is in the earth then the gardening hose will cool down the water.

I can test it yet as my water is just circulating at room temp as i am still running it in.

umm.. well you could get a dorm frig.. put a water tank in it with a pump running water out of a hole in the frig throu insulated pipe which leads to a copper pipe (inside the tank)

:D
