its 120gal i think 4x2x2foot tank

at the moment i've got in it
1x firemouth 5"
1x green sev 4"
2x geo tapajos 4-5"
3x heckelii 5"
4x rainbow cichlid 4"

is that tank overstocked? do i have room for more? i do 50% weekly waterchanges

in my other 4x2x2 growing out i have firemouths, ellioti, blue eyed cichlids, brasiliensis, angels, a gold sev and a JD

this is my long run plan for stocking the 2 tanks
1st tank
4x firemouths
3x heckelii
1x blue eyed cichlid
1 or 2x brasiliensis
1x JD (female i think)

2nd tank
4x ellioti
2x sevs
2x geo tapajos (although im currently chasing 4 more)
1x blue eyed cichlid

and depending on which tank would be more suitable 3x angelfish

let me know what you think of these setups, and if they're overstocked

They look ok but a bit heavy with all those Thoricthys, they are not really a gregarious cichlid like the Geophagus and if 2 pairs in the tank formed it wouldnt be great. Also the Heckeli - these are a hit and miss fish so I would let your self judge the situation. Thinking about it tank one looks good but I would just stick to one Brasiliensis if you get one as they are big cichlids - like bigger than most people expect and consider just a pair of the Firemouths.

Tank 2 Get the other Geos, maybe just 1 Sev to keep the breeding chances down and maybe 2 Ellioti rather than 4 - you could probably put in the Angels here but I would just do 2 as the third will just get rejected and possibly bullied.

Nice sounding tanks though :)

cheers for the advice, yeah im keeping a close eye on the heckelii as i've heard they can quickly turn on one another, i've got 4 standard 4 foot tanks out the back collecting rain, which ideally will be for any pairs that form (hoping to breed thoricthys, severums and tapajos, and possibly heckelli but from what i've read breeding attempts usually end in a dead fish)

i will take your advice on 1 brasiliensis, 2 angels and more tapajos

my main concern with my stock lists is that my fish will become stunted

i do know where i can get a 10x2.5x2.5ft tank come to think of it

Actually if you have the space to move breeding pairs out you can probably manage your original plans. The only one I would worry about stunting would be the Brasiliensis as they are a big fish. But the rest are all 7-10 inch fish so will be fine just keep up on the water changes and keep the water changes up.

If you do start breeding consider setting up those 4 foots on a rack of some kind so you can move a pair out that look conditioned and then keep the female in there with the brood and move the male back to the show tanks. It usually ends up with a dead fish if you just get a pair in a community tank and if you cant move the female before the male wants to breed again thats when its likely you will loose the female :(

One thing I didnt mention before is with the Geos get more soon as in pairs or trios they can be really hard with each other. But I find 4 is a good minimum number and given the size of them they take up a decent amount of stocking so I tend to stick to 4 - preferably with 1 male in there but 2 can work as they are more of a pairing fish than a hareem though not monogamous.
