Hi everyone,
I have two mosqito fish: a girl and a boy and the girl looks much bigger and has the blackish spot on her side. She has had it for about a week now. Does anyone know if this means she is pregnant?

She is pregnant. The black spot is the eyes of the fry inside of her.

What kind of mosquito fish is it that you have? Both Heterandria formosa and all species of Gambusia go by that name. It is one reason we sometimes seem pretentious and call things by their scientific names.

This is not correct the black is a body tissue inside the body cavity.
And this is very bold in most Gambusia's but espically G. affinins

these fish are very quick to eat their own fry so saving fry in an aquaria is quite difficualt. However fun to try
Good luck

Then why does it disappear immediately after it gives birth? I've always heard it was the eyes of the fry as they are jet black.

I guess I just learned something.
