im not sure because all of the pictures i have seen have females with black dorsal fins, and if so, why will it not breed with the male cichlid i have.

by electric yellow i assume its a labidochromis caeruleus with electric yellow being a common name.

If it is meant to be then it looks to be a hybrid and not worth breeding.

Males and females of this species look identical.

Could you post a pic of the male as you may have some other species as this could be a female of something

i am certain the male is a labidochromis, and the female behaves in the same manner (building nests).

heres another pic of the female and the male, and some of the tank.

The second pic is indeed a labidochromis caeruleus ( yellow lab )looks like a good example too, could be a male or female as they look the same, your "female" is a hybrid most likley a yellow lab cross of some sort.

I would not breed these fish the resulting fry are totaly worthless and should never be resold or given away.

Do you think the fish shop would take it back as i only bought it a week or so ago and its perfectly healthy

id say the first is a red zebra.thats what mine looked like.second is a yellow lab

This is a red zebra of mine, almost identical to wild caught male at the importers

is there a possibility that it could be a red zebra/lab hybrid beause it has no variation in colour and one spot on its rear fin, also, does a red zebra biuld nests?

A very strong possibility its a cross with a red zebra, I take it by nest building you mean digging if so all mbuna do it normally males but females do it as well, mbuna have some strange habits.

edit, just found a pic of a hybrid i used to have

i have 1 (had 2 larger died)hybrid also.mine looks just like yours adambrum

i took back my mystery fish and now have a female lab, which has had no problems with the male at all.

you do know the only way to sex labs is by venting them ? (looking at there bits)
