Is Medicine Harmful To Invertabrates?

hi all,
im pretty sure that i have heard before that medicine to treat diseases such as white spot can be very harmful to inverts, ever since i heard this i thought nothing of it as i have had no diseases in at least 10 months, but now ive got no choice but to treat my tank as my new harlequin rasboras have got white spot, i was wandering if anyone could tell me if white spot medicine will harm my amano shrimp, and if it will then advise on what to do, thank you for any help you can give.

You can always try the salt and raised temp treatment. Normally both amanos and harlequins can live at 82F longer term and they can both likely handle 85/86F for a treatment period although there are no guarantees. Amanos normally need brackish to produce viable young, so they should have no issues with the salt. I would monitor the rasboras if you use the salt but my bet is they will likely be ok as well.

Salt dosing would be 1 teaspoon/gallon. This should be added in two 1/2 or three 1/3 doses over 24 - 36 hours to avoid changing the TDS too rapidly. Mix the salt in tank water before adding it. The salt should remain in the water for about 10 more days after the fish are 100% spot free. Be sure to put salt into new water when doing any water changes during treatment. Salt can only be removed via water changes and some live plants wont like it.

Where inverts are present work on the rule of no copper and heavy metals in the treatment as this is what will harm them even in the short term so I probably would advise separating them to a new tank if you are unsure of the contents of any medicine you use then you can treat the inverts seperately to stop them being a carrier when you put them back in

Just for information. I teated my 60 gallon with a malchite green/formalin medication for white spot. I used full strength and my amano shrimp lived through it all.

When I had to treat for whitespot, I couldn't catch my amano shrimps so they had to take their chance. I used King British original formula WS3. The shrimps hid for the duration of the treatment, but none of them died.
