This has come to my attention lately. I received many opinions from Yahoo! Answers, most of them agreed that it is impossible to cycle a tank that small.

But the concept remains the same. No matter how much water there is, beneficial bacteria can still be created, and ammonia and nitrites still have the potential to rise and decrease, right?

I am looking for responses and explanations. Thank you.

You cycle the filter, not the tank. Add a small cycled filter to a gallon jar, instantly cycled, and will stay cycled as long as that bacteria has a food source.

Sure you can cycle a 1 gallon. You could do it just like any other filter. The real problem is there aren't many fish that you could put in a tank that small and if anything gets just a little off in a tank that small the effects are amplified. In other words there is not enough water in a tank that small to dilute any contaminants down. What I am saying is any problem that would be a small problem in a 50 gallon tank is a huge problem in a 1 gallon tank.
