Hello.
I had a tank with 2 female platies in and they were both quite docile. I bought a Siamese Fighter fish today and put him in with my platies. He was with other platies in the LFS and seemed to just ignore them. Since i've added him, he chases my platies when they go near him and tries to peck at their fins. At the moment he hasn't done any damage but i was wondering if i should take him out now before he does any damage or if i should just leave him and let them establish their own hierarchy. He only chases them when they go near him and they have plenty of places to hide.

Thanks
Lauren

You should take him out. Siamese fighters should be kept alone, or with bottom dweller, shrimps, maybe snails and frogs. not platies. If he doesnt hurt them, they will hurt him.

Pet stores tend to shove SFF in with everything. They really should be on their own in a nice 5-10 gallon tank.

Also, how big is the tank you have them in?

I have my crowntail with 3 guppies in a 7 gallon tank and he did that as well for the first 2-3 days. The guppies remained unharmed as he really only chased them away but after that time he hasn't bothered them at all and ignores them completely. If he mainly chases them a little and then stops I would give it a day or two. If he got a long with the fish at the store he might with your fish as well. I would agree to take him out if he showed any more aggression such as an actual persistent attack. This is just my opinion tho. Perhaps someone will come along with more helpful info. I dont think he's evil, its just his nature. Have a separate tank handy incase you do need to remove him. Also knowing how large the tank is is also helpful. :good:
