Well, the Viejas found a home to a 150g tank, and my poor 75g was looking reather empty with 2 3-inch sevs in it. My husband saw my displeasure and surprised with 10 juvie Convicts. They are about 1-1.5 inches long and super cute. I know they have a horrible rep at breeding time. I did explain to my husband that when they start to pair, we need to rehome some of them. Pictures will come soon of the little guys but they are all hiding as they are not sure what to think of such a large empty tank.

hmmm I would not have been happy.... fair enough they are young but the numbers are seriously going to multiply in a few months if your not careful.

Good news on the Vieja though :)

Ahhhh, that's a lot of convicts  Be careful with those guys, my glory is just about as bad as your jewel

When I see then start to pair, the majority will be rehomed. I am looking to have only 1 pair in the end. I understand that they are pretty vigorous breeders, but I do really like the way they look. I also have an LFS that will buy fry, as well as here in St Louis people are always looking for good fish as good prices. I usually will rehome for free provided people can prove their knowledge of fish.

I know. I heard horror stories about your girl :p I don't know what it is. I have this thing for pain in the butt fish :X I think I have a problem...or maybe I just like a challenge. I do not know

I have that same problem  I had a jewel for a short amount of time when I was rocking a 29 gallon that I fell in love with, which was a tank mate for a firemouth and convict, under the idea that "Hey, if you can put 2 or 3 bigger fish in a 4 footer, why couldn't you do 2 or 3 medium fish in a 2 1/2 footer!?"

That jewel started kicking #16#####, and I took it back, along with the firemouth. kept glory, and that was probably the stupidest thing I ever did, since she's an absolute terror, but I love her anyway

I've never had a 75 gallon tank before, but I'd be weary of keeping a breeding pair of them, cause they will dare to take on your severums when they spawn (they might even dare take on your severums when they're not spawning) and maybe keep 1 or 2 males, if any

Convicts are honestly my favorites out there, but I'd be careful, it might just end up being a repeat of your jewel issues :look:

I don't know if this would be a good or bad idea, but maybe you could look into some angelfish or other medium-large semi aggressive/peaceful fish out there rather than little terrors  :good:

I think the Severums will be okay, as they were the only fish in the tank that the Jewel COULDNT hurt. I had seen her go after them, but as they go bigger, started fighting back. Jewel killed the 4 inch Vieja, but the Sevs were untouched. No nips, no injuries. I think the Severums will be alright honestly. They are small, but they are feisty.

I will def. be careful though, and I appreciate the advice. I may just try to sex them and keep only males or only females. Are they calmer when they are the same sex?
And I do not really like angelfish all that much

p.s. I still have the Jewel. There is harmony in the Mbuna tank finally. it took a couple of days but Jewel has realized that my 7 inch Socolofi is the boss. Last night was pretty funny. The tank lights were out and I watched Jewel tear off after Ol Blue (socolofi) and then Blue saw her coming, she turned around and smacked Jewel in the face with her tail! Jewel got her bearings, then went on about her business. There is still some aggression in the tank, but Jewel is slowly realizing that the Mbuna can, and will whoop her butt!

From what I understand, the males will right if there is a female in the tank, and convicts are extremely easy to pair, there's no "buy 4 of each sex and hope," it's just "buy a male and a female and they'll make babies eventually"

Females tend to be less aggressive and stay 4 inches, (like your jewel) but after spending plenty of time around the forums, I've been learning that gender doesn't have very much to do with it, at all.

Glory was still only about an inch long when I did the jewel thing, and there's not a doubt in my mind that a couple of those convicts, given their reputation of trying to take out anything, may try to go for the severums. My male convict (my boyfriend named him 'boyfriend' since we kept calling him glory's boyfriend) was holding his own and claiming territory with a 5 inch managuenese cichlid in a little 2 foot long tank, and the managuenese was more scraped up than he was!

I will keep a close eye on things. I will def. rehome if things do not work out. It is def. trial and error with these kinds of fish. That is why I still have my Jewel. I love her and I cannot bring myself to give her up. I do have the means to reaarange things in the future.

Keep me posted, and let me know if any breed and wreak havoc. I'm worried to keep so much as a BN pleco or medium armored catfish in my future breeding tank, I'd be worried about the severums, honestly. Though if they do leave the sevs alone, I'd be more inclined to give a pleco or something of the sorts a try.

Well, you manages to get my paranoia up lol, so I did some reserch and found a full 50g setup on craiglist for 50 bucks...filter/heat established filter. Unfortuately, and this is just how I operate, I will have some fish that will have to go to the lfs. Can you believe they were keeping two oscars and two jds in this tank??? I am going to temporarily house them in the 75g and move the convicts to the 50g when we pick it up tomorrow. I am going to call my lfs buddy on monday to see if he will take those guys. that tank was way to small for them :(

If you want, you can keep a boy and a girl in a 20 gallon long tank, that's all they take. 2 convicts imo is all you need  10 of them is a bit outrageous  convicts are my favorite of the cichlids, but my boy and girl are a handful already

on that note, here's a good shot of the terror herself, gonna enter her for the FOTM just for giggles

Also, people manage to always get over run with babies with these guys, so maybe you can get another bigger fish for the 75 gallon, like maybe that green terror you guys wanted before, and use some of the fry for treats. Not really my thing, but it's better than just siphoning them down the drain or something, which some people tend to do after a while.

I gotta figure out how to get rid of the two oscars and two jack dempsey that come with the tank before I think about green terrors! LOL
