I've been given a tank which has a undergravel filter and the guy says just keep the powerhead a little bit above the surface water and I don't need to bother with pumps and bubbles is this true?

Air stones are not necessary if you have enough surface movement. Nowadays, air pumps are generally only used in tanks with undergravel filters, very tall tanks with small surface area and for decoration purposes.

generally pumps are used in many tanks, not just for UGF systems, and the others mentioned here. they are a popular addition to many, if not most tanks. whilst there is no NEED to have one, they are defiantly not exclusive to the things mentioned above.

use one if you like how it looks, whatever tank you have. you do need to use caution if you have a planted tank though.

Air pumps are a common item in breeding setups. All but a couple of my 30some tanks have air driven filtration of some sort.

I do want plants in the tank is it still safe to add a pump air stone?

Yes it's fine, but if you're running a pressurised CO2 system the extra water agitation will drive off CO2.

Erm, that is exactly what I said.. decoration purposes = to please the eye. There are not exactly many reasons to use airpumps which is not one of the three I mentioned.

Unless you are trying to say that most people use airpumps just because they believe they do some good? ..which is also not the case, in my experience.

Is java moss a good plant?
Yes, it is generally an undemanding plant which will grow in most conditions.

No, but one of, there isn't really an easiest plant to grow, there are many, most Anubias, Crypts, Microsorum will do well with minimal lighting.

I find java moss as extremely easy to grow. In an extreme case I added some to a tank that simply sat in the middle of a room with a window on the North side. Six months later, when I was finally ready to move things around, the java moss clump was far bigger than the one I had originally put in the tank. With no artificial light and no intentional fertilizer additives, I found it grew just fine.
