ok i have a question regarding red claws and am hoping you can help me!you sure sound like you know your crayfish stuff.
i would pm you but am unsure of your id!

yesterday morning i adopted a large female red claw. i added her to my crayfish tank and she got a bit, erm, friendly with my largest male. i didnt think anything would happen so quick but this morning she is carrying eggs. lots and lots of eggs.

i know they will take around 25 days to 'hatch' but i cant find any information regarding whether i should remove her from the tank into a quiet space of her own? or leave her be? one site says to take her out as soon as she'd laid eggs, then replace her after 24hrs (dont see the point of this?) another site says remove her completely for the time it takes for the eggs to hatch?
the male seems to be keeping her hostage in the cave, if she tries to come out he runs over and pushes her back in then stands guard or sits on top of her. is this normal?
the tank contains 1 large + 1 juvi male red claw and 1 large and 1 juvi female red claw, a featherfin catfish, a pim catfish and two very large angels. the temp is a constant 25 degrees.

bump up to the top cause ive seen him around!

will try pming if he doesnt see this!

oops not like me to miss a post. sorry. here goes:

i would not do any thing till you are sure the "berry" is good. lots onf nice dark (red) eggs

you got two options. move the males out of the tank till after the berry has hatched and been removed, or removing the female till its all over.
i would, normally suggest you remove the males (less stress on the carrying female), but in this case, i think the female is the best option. leave her in the "new" tank till all the little cray (redclaw have no laval stage, after hatching) have detached themselfs. she will start to eat them if you do not.

so give here a her own tank, remove her when the little uns have all detached. then the fun begins, lol. trying to stop the brood, eating each other!!! incidentally, under, ideal conditions the berry takes 50 days from fertilisation to hatching!

50 days? wow thats not what i read. many many many thanks for coming and answering that for me. it was a bit of a shock this morning to see what she'd done! i cant see too well at the eggs now as shes curled her tail totally round them. this morning i think they were a browny green colour?

sounds good :good: :good: they will go grey if unsterilised. what temp you got her at? its worth dropping a little after the berry arrives. bacterial infections are a problem with, all cray, but being tropical redclaw suffer more than most. i have not heard of anything that is useful to add to the tank, but a little (emulsified) teatree oil may help.
if possible, bump up the ph, cray get their calcium form the water they live in, not from the food they eat, but this is not important, just an "if you can" thing. you may also find the female moults, after the berry hatches, if she does, dont worry.

shame you are in Belgium, i could do with some new genetics for the pool.

finally got a glimpse of the berry today after nearly a month of looking!

looks like hundreds of nice deep red eggs under there!!

not long to go before they hatch!
