Just (today) got my tank up and running. Is the heater needed to fishless cycle the tank? Because I've kept goldfish and they're coldwater and the filters work the same way with presumably the same bacteria.

If the heater would just speed up the cycle, which I'm guessing it might, what temperature is best. Currently it's between 24 and 25 degrees Celsius.

Thanks for reading.

It is not necessary, but Highly recommended.

If you do a fishless cycle with a heater, keep the temperature at 84 degrees F (29 degrees C).

At that temp, beneficial bacteria will colonize the fastest in your filter.

youre lucky your not on a ventilator in intensive care...ammonia is lethal!

Isn't that the stuff you see in movies that the bad guys attach to tissues to knock people out?

Agree, 84F/29C and be sure to make pH one of your daily tests along with ammonia and after a week or so nitrite(NO2). It helps to have some interactions here and not just assume you can figure it all out from the articles.

 I guess the nose story should make us glad most of the household ammonia we all get is down under/around 10%, as the higher might really give rise to some accidents!
