I've bought 10 cardinals, 5 kuhli loach, 1 guppi and 2 dwarf gouramis for my 4 foot tank. After about 3 weeks id like to add 10 golden barbs and 2 discus. Would that be too much? Even with regular water changes? My tank is I think 45 gallons

Dont get the Discus they are not really flexible community fish. The Gold Barbs sound good though, not sure what to suggest as an alternative to the Discus as center piece fish...

hang on ... won't the gold barbs rip the guppies tail off? My Dad's got some of these fish and they are seriously nippy little things

Like said before discus do not make good community fish. You are supposed to stard with discus and then pick the fish that best match the discus. And discus also need to be in groups of 5 or more. Unless they are a breeding pair like mine.
Good luck- Mark
