I enjoyed reading this It's great that you're so open and honest about being nervous - I'm really good at acting calm and collected for interviews, thankfully, but I'm always going nuts with anxiety on the inside. That being said, I think that for businesses like this which are customer-service oriented employers prefer to know that they are hiring actual human beings. If you act like a stone-cold rock then that doesn't bode well for relating to customers.

I worked for Petco's major competitor for several years, in the "Pet Care" department (so I dealt with the birds, small animals, reptiles, and fish). I came in with a strong background in small animals and the beginnings of knowledge about fish, but had to really learn a lot. I'm glad that they actually wanted you to know something before they hired you, that sounds promising. I think the only thing you will have trouble with is how often you will either have to turn away customers or, more likely, watch a goldfish be carried off to his doom. I think you're aware of this though. All you can really do is try to educate the customer as much as possible without them thinking you're a know-it-all jerk When lives are at stake, it can be a fine line to walk! Reading what you've shared, I think you'll do your best and the fish and customers will both be better for it

Well, I've "worked" the past 3 days, if you can call it that

Just getting through the computer training, I actually start the hands-on work this coming monday, so I'll be sure to come back and share when I get home

Late update, if anybody cares to read


The job is going phenomenal. It is a very gratifying job. I don't get many hours, nor does it pay as well as my previous job, but I do what I love.. the only thing unhappy is the bills! So I will be pursuing another job, but overall, it's great.

Water changes. Tons. It's outrageous. Only roughly 10 percent of water is changed, but you figure we have 12 walls of freshwater fish. Each wall has 9 tanks, each at 30 gallons.. yeah, entire shifts are dedicated to water changes! But I don't mind really, customers usually break it up.

On that topic, I haven't ran into too many troublesome customers. Some people come in and ask why my fish are dead and although I do, in great detail, outline the nitrogen cycle, company policy kinda restricts me from suggesting customers wait 4 to 6 weeks. Instead we say one week but I curve this by suggesting they seed their tank, choose extremely hardy fish, stay on top of power water changes. At the end of the day though a customers dead glofish isn't worth my job, it's a bit unnerving, but oh well. =/

I did however, have a lady come in wanting to purchase one #41#### ORANGE glofish. The tank had about 35 or so of those guys in it, maybe 5 being orange, not to mention the smallest ones! IT TOOK FOREVER!

I've learned a lot about saltwater, in fact, working here coupled with the discount led me to purchase a nano tank! So I've been busy with that.

Awesome. Really glad its ging great mate, I can imagine the water changes are insane haha, Look forward to seeing your Nano up and running Id love to dabble in the salty world but dont think im ready yet.
