Interpet No.8 - Anti Fungus & Finrot

So.....

I've purchased some Interpet No.8 to help treat a couple of my Corys. I know I need 11ml of it in my 110L tank, but I'm not sure what media I need to remove from my filter?

I've got a Juwel Rekord 800 which has the 'Bioflow Super 400' internal filter.

Now on the instructions from the treatment, it says to remove the carbon and zeolite media, but I haven't a clue what that is and if I have any?!... The filter itself has blue, green, black sponges with some white padding at the top.

Which are which, and if I remove the carbon and zeolite, how will I keep the bacteria alive in them, and will my tank still have enough bacteria in it to keep cycled?

If thats all you have in your filter then you dont have either so dont worry! The sponges are just plain old sponges for the bacteria to grow in and the padding is just to filter out any particles from the water.

Carbon is in a net bag or add on filter container and looks like pieces of charcol, and zeolite media looks like little greenish rocks. These would absorb and filter out any medication you put in the tank which is why they tell you to remove them.

The filter itself has blue, green, black sponges with some white padding at the top.

The black sponge is impregnated with carbon. Depending on how long it's been in the filter, It's probably full up by now (unless it's been in there less than a week) so it shouldn't adsorb much, if any, of the med. If you want to remove it just in case, there won't be too many bacteria in it as it's quite a thin sponge compared to the others.

After treatment has finished, you will need to put a new black sponge in or get some loose carbon and put it in a mesh bag to remove the med. Or just do it with water changes. If you do use carbon to remove the med I would throw it away after a week as it will be full of the med. Then it's up to you whether or not to get another new black sponge. i haven't used carbon in any form on a regular basis for years.


The Juwel filters don't have zeolite, so that's not a problem.
