Hello,
I've got a Gourami which has a wound on its side which has started to grow fluffy fungus on it. I have some Interpet Fungus treatment No.8 but it says dissolve it in warm tap water. Won't this damage the biological filter because it's tap water?

Thanks
Jez

No. It'll be fine.

Do make sure to remove carbon from the filter (if you use it, and you probably don't need to, but that's a topic for another day).

Cheers, Neale

If you are concerned then I would suggest that you scoop the amount of water needed from your tank, dissolve the med's in that then return it to the tank.

If your Gourami is a Dwarf species and the 'wound' is in the mouth to gill area then in my experience little can be done. They are very prone to this infection due to something in the gene pool apparently. I tried to keep them twice but fell foul to this condition both times ending in deaths.

Good luck :good:

Thank you. It is a dwarf gourami, but the wound is well behind the front fins on the body. He seems to be quite happy and it doesn't bother him. I've used the med last night - used water from the tank to be safe. A lot of the fluffiness seems to have dropped off overnight, which is good. The wound is quite red, but I'm hoping that means it's healthy rather than anything else.

Great forum! Thank you.

Well, to update, the problem continues and I think the fish is getting worse. It is gulping a lot now, although seems not to be in distress. The wound is pretty deep and white, but the fluffiness has gone. It formed again, but dropped off again. I don't know what to do. I think there is another patch of fungus forming on the fish on the other side. Also, there is a slight wound on the outside of his gill which has appeared.

He's eating and doing normal stuff, but he's just in a bit of a state. Is there stronger stuff I can use? I've tried Melafix first, then the Interpet stuff. We're in the third week of treatment now. -_-

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Wish I knew what the next treatment to try should be but I don't. Good luck, keep us posted.

I'm afraid he was in such a state today that I had to euthenase him. His feelers dropped off, his fins were falling apart and he was showing signs of distress. The wound in his side was down to his skeleton. It was the best thing for him, but it was awful to have to do. I shall miss him.

Thanks for the support.
