Enthusiastic "Re-Beginner"
While I remain open to the fact that I may not by any means know all that I can know about the various heterotrophic species that typically compete in a freshwater aquarium environment, I feel the use of the term "develop" may hide the key difference. Our two autotrophic species are quite different from the typical heterotrophic freshwater species. The autotrophs are unusually slow to develop, whereas most other bacteria, including the freshwater heterotrophs are extremely fast, taking hours to divide rather than days. I just don't feel there's typically any "developing" to do when it comes to heterotrophs - they're there and they can multiply very, very rapidly when needed.
