Insulating Tank In Garage?

Hey,

Just wondering how well would a box made out of celotex (thick as possible all sealed apart from an entrance bit which id have to figure out how to make it as sealed as possible but easy to open), and having a insulated cover over the tank in a garage in the UK (cold winters) keep a fish tank heated at 28-30 degrees? 210 litre tank, with 2 300w heaters, like what would be the difference on the strain on the heaters vs the average room in a house over winter?

Strain on the heaters is hard to say, depends on the ambient temperature. I know a 1000w heater will give a 60F+ increase on a 150 gallon tub outdoors, wrapped with moving blankets & a 2" thick styro sheet on top. That is with the heater wide open, I didn't get a heat controller in yet, and a "buddy" (thanks pal) got a bunch of large NW cichlids for free. You know I made him help me set it up.

Taking the top off was impressive, below 30F with snow, lots of steam, fish were hitting snowflakes as well as the flake & pellets I tossed in. Thankfully the controller only took a few days to get in, I was plugging & unplugging, checking the temperature a few times daily. The joys of pulling off a fish rescue.

if you used 100mm thick or thicker they would be snug as a bug, I would have thought.

I used to do it to my motor bike to keep the condensation off through the winter. Get the double foiled back stuff though.

Sounding good then, next step is to convince my dad to let me rent a space in his garage live with my mum and with a 55 gal and 15 gal in my room and the garage full of tools and a motorbike i've no chance of another tank. If he'll let me 55gal will be going down his for a grow out tank and i'll have tanks for 2 breeding pairs of discus and for the smaller fry, will be first crack at breeding discus so dunno if i'll have enough tanks for the i guess the production line of different batches of fry as i've heard you shouldnt keep different sized batches in the same tank, but will see how i go.
