Instead Of Carbon

So I got my tank set up today and am going to start my fishless cycle in the next day or two. I have a aquaclear 70 power filter and it came with the foam, carbon and Biomax ceramic rings. Ive read that i dont need to use the carbon in the filter unless im trying to get chemicals out of the water. So my question is this what should i use instead of the carbon. Should i put in another sponge or should i add more BioMax or something else. Im a newb and need some advice. thanks

Replacing it with a sponge will make it easier to swap back to carbon if you should ever need to. Fishing ceramics out if filters is a pain.
