I have setup my new breeding tank and just wanted to check something out.. to create an instant cycle I can use one of the filter pads that are currently in the filter for my 180L tank right? So all I would do is cut a little bit off, and place that in the new filter for the breeding tank.. and then the tank is ready to go?

In theory yes, but I'd still keep an eye on the water chemistry for a week just to make sure. Another way would be to add a bucket or three of water from your other tank (the same one your taking the filter media from).

Fishkeeper, do you have any water stat testing kits? If not I would highly recommend them so that you know whether you have sucessfully cloned your larger tank or not.

But you've got the right idea.

The water contains little or no bacteria needed, so that would be about as much use as a krypton teapot.

Indeed, filter pads should work, just make sure not to put too many fish in for the amount of media used.

Just the 4 fish would be going in their.. purely for spawning purposes only. :)

Tank setup, heater, pump and filter working with old media. Added stress zyme and aqua safe.. now how long should I wait considering the water has come straight from my tap.. or should I just top up the last 20% of the tank with water from my other tank?

Couldn't do any harm to top up from other tank imho. You just need to get it up to temp now before adding fish.

You did use de-chlorine/chloramine treatment to the tap water didnt you?

What type of filter are you using? I ask because an external filter with normal inlet pipe would suck through the fry so it might be worth putting a foam filter over the inlet pipe and turning down your flow rate. If its an internal filter you've just got to try and avoid the unit sucking the fry into it.

Yes, added all the required chemicals etc. It's an internal filter.
