I have an 'old' platty in my tank, which I inherrited a long time ago. Hes been fine in there for along time, but the other day I noticed he wasnt himself. He was hiding at the back of the tank for long periods. I used a net to push him out and saw that the fin which should be on the right hand side is completely gone, just a small stump left.

He can swim, but his turning is awkward. I was wondering will it grow back ? I know they can grow back, but what if they are completely gone.....will he be in pain with it ?

I have put some melafix in, but im not sure thats going to even help... Is there anything I can do to help it grow back ?

i have heard they do not grow back

i would put it into a hospital tank a start treatment asap!

Fins can grow back, it just depends on how much of the fin is missing. Generally though fish are pretty good at healing, so I would expect the fin to grow back, unless its down to the spines, which I hear isnt too good at all. One of my spotted silver dollars regrew half its tail fin once, so theres hope out there.

Any idea what caused the fin to disappear, what other fish you got in the tank with it?

I dont know if this helps, but i have a bronze cory that lost all of one of its pectoral fins, i put in a fin rot treatment as on the box it says it encourages new growth and repair, it grew back completely within a month easily!

treatment and remedy depend on, how the fin was lost. though the use of Melafix will do no harm, used properly it will retard and sometimes fix both fungal and bacterial problems. if the problem is fin rot, i would remove the fish to a hospital tank, if you have one, and treat from there. if it has been "nipped off" the Melafix will do about as much as anything can. as for if it will regrow, well i guess it depends on how bad the damage is to the stump of the fin. incidentally can you see any blood?

I cant see any blood and I have no idea how he lost it. I watch the fish most nights and have never seen anything attack the Platty. Hes pretty chunky and keeps himself to himself. Only thing I thought that I added some new plants and moved things around the other weekend and maybe I did it, but im pretty careful to make sure I dont damage my fish normally.

Theres hardly anything there now, just a tiny little stump near his right gill....

What would you treat with ? I have put him in a QT tank (fully cycled) but other than melafix, what do I use ?

to be honest i would leave it at that for now. moving to more powerful anti bacs will be both expensive and hard on your fish. see if and how well the wound heals before you move on to new treatments.
