I would love to have a convict! I was wondering what the minimum size tank was and what the compatible fish were. Thanks! :)

Thanks

Whats the tank size and compatible fish for convicts? :)

I have a breeding pair, and they do very well in my 50 gal. I think the minimum for a breeding pair is 30 if I'm not mistaken...

also, there aren't many, if any fish that will be compatible with convicts, because they are too aggressive, esp. when they have spawned! They become ferocious!! They will even nip at your hand if you put it in the tank (I had to re plant one of the plants...hehehe)

That's true...when breeding, they are monsters. But, if you keep only males or only females, they do not cause much trouble. That is, if they are kept with other cichlids. I would suggest getting females because they are more colorful and peaceful around other cichlids. But, I would only keep them with other cichlids and that means you need a pretty large tank since most cichlids grow prettly large. Just research all the different types of fish that your local fish stores carry and make a decision from that.

Could I keep one in a 30 gallon? Maybe with a angel fish or something? What fish could I have with it? :)

Definitely no on the Angelfish and Convict.

You could do a Convict in a 30 gal, with maybe some Tiger Barbs, then some type of bottom feeder. That would be a pretty cool tank.

Hmmm...I'm not sure about mixing tiger barbs...they might nip the poor cichlid's fins... =(

If they did that the "poor" cichlid would probably eat them!

My TB's and Green Terror completely ignore each other now although when they were growing up, one of the TB's nipped the GT's fin and promptly lost half his tail in the retaliation - lets just say he never did it again.

Yeah I think the poor little Convict will be okay against some Tiger Barbs, those guys can stand up to just about anything! And people talk about how bad Tiger Barbs are, but it all depends on what else is with them. Like in my tank for instance, I think the Tigers get picked on more than anything else.

would this work?

6 tiger barbs
1 gold severum
1 red tailed black shark
1 gold nugget pleco?

:)

In a 30g tank? You could have the tiger barbs and RTBS, but the others wouldn't be suitable for a tank that small I'm afraid :(

Severums get to 12", gold nuggets get to 16". Min tank size for one severm would probably be 55g at a push (with no other big fish or plecs, maybe the barbs at most), preferably bigger. A GN would need a 4-5ft tank by at least 18".

How about a keyhole or rainbow cichlid or something that kind of size/temperament? It might even be necessary to go smaller and get a pair of rams instead? And a bristlenose or one of the smaller species of plecs (flash plec perhaps, or clown plec?). But then you might have to rethink the tiger barbs and go for a more peaceful shoal of larger tetras and maybe swap the RTBS idea for a rainbow shark as they're more peaceful.
