In Built Water Softeners

Hello everyone

We're having our house re-plumbed and my Mum's asked for a water softener to be put in. Will water from these standard water softeners (ie the ones that you add softener salt into) be alright for aquarium use?? I'm worried that the salt that you soten the water with might contain some extra nasties that won't do my fish any good but I'm also hoping that it's ok 'cos it means I'll have clean soft water, straight from the tap!!

i use tap water that is treated in a water softtner... it works perfectly with aquairums. i have not had any problems. what a water softner does is reduce salt content in the water, so it will be good for the majority of species. also, some species like soft water rather than hard.
