Ok so my tank has been up for a month now and i just got the water tested. everything is perfect except my nitrite is a little high. easy fixable. my stress is coming from. my fish have gotten ick now for the 2nd time. and now that i have floating plants(i forget the name but its like a bigger version of duckweed). the tank is turning into a mess every time i change the water before medication. its driving me crazy. its getting all over the filter. the filter is pushing it around and under allot. im freaking out. how do i stop the plants from going every were and making a mess of my water? how do i make sure ick never comes back?

EDIT: should i consider a different plant? is there one that will just refuse to go underwater?

where did u get ur fish from? if the same place that could be why they have ick. u could try using the ick stuff from petsmart. maybe u have to many plants? or to many floating ones?
hope i could help haha

I was just at the pet store and asked the same thing. They told me to try the metafix and the other stuff that looks kinda the same. Add those two and then a a pinch of garlic they said but make sure that it is all ground up. They said that garlic is in most ick remedies anyways why not just add a pinch more. They said that it works great in their own tanks. I haven't had a chance to use this yet but it might work. let me know how it goes if you do use this.

the pet store told me that it can take up to a month or more to get ride of ick.

It doesn't usually take that long for the fish to start showing signs. I treated my tank probly 3 weeks ago for it and it was off the fish within a week or so of daily dosing. I used quick ick. It seemed to work on my tetras. What kind of fish do you have?

tetras and 3 gourami. and 2 plecostomus. I saved 1 big plecostomus from my friend who had it in a jar for 2 days.
The ick i know i can fix i just need to know how to protect my tank from getting it again im mostly stressed about these @#$%ing plants thats are "blowing" everywere in my tank because of my filter...would a giant canister filter change that? or should i just scoop them all out and toss the $6 away? BTW my tank is 55 gallons

you can weight them down enough to fix that or a canister filter would do the trick. I wouldn't worry so much about the plants, eventually they will settle down and you won't have to worry about it if part of the water is relatively calm.

sorry to hear you're going through a rough time with the tank, you said it's been up for a month so i assume you did a fish-in cycle? If you're still getting readings for nitrite, you're probably not fully cycled yet. If thats the case and the fish have been exposed to toxins, that may well contribute to stress and also cause them to be more susceptible to disease.

You need to ensure that you keep your water spot on, so any readings for ammonia/nitrite and you need to do a water change right away. Water quality is a paramount. If you do not have your own testing kit, then get a liquid one, the strips aren't reliable.

Also, for curiosity, why did your friend keep a pleco in a jar?

if i was you and i was getting hacked off with plants, they'd be in the bin already. ive thrown out loads of live plants just because they were doing my head in, or not rooting, or floating round the tank when they shoudnt be.

i treated whitespot for 5 days and it hasnt been back since.

the high nitrite levels you talk about . what was the reading from the test? this is more than likely why your fish keep getting ich. the ich parasite is present in water anyway , it just takes a fish to become stressed and therefore its immune system drop slightly to become suseptable to it . nitrites would certainly contribute to this. as for the floating plants , do you have a lot of surface agitation from your filter outlets? they really will do better with a calmer waters surface .

If you -really- want to learn about and fully treat your ich problem, follow this link that one of our experienced aquarists, oldman47, has pointed us to in the past:

Ich Info

It is very important to understand how to treat for a sufficient time period or the problem will keep recurring.

Problems like ich are an increased probability from not fully understanding cycling (read the 3 baseline articles: The Nitrogen Cycle, The Fishless Cycle and The Fish-In Cycle in our Beginners Resource Center) and not fully understanding and practicing good water changing technique (ie. gravel-clean-water-change habits for tank maintenance after the cycling period has finished, which of course is probably not your case as you are probably still in a fish-in cycling situation.) Working on these learning areas has been what our beginner section is all about for some years and there are many good people here who can help.
