Hi guys :( 3 of the fish that I got for the community died yesterday in quarantine! I'm not sure if this was a pet store problem because they were still in the pet store's water! I'm so done with getting fish! There's only 1 guppy and 1 Molly balloon left :( Please help me in what went wrong? was this my fault?

Count yourself lucky, I lost an angel and 7 tetras over 2 days but that didn't stop me.

What are your water stats?

And if you only got them yesterday, go back to the LFS. If you only had them in their water though it can only have been a small amount. where you filtering it?

most stores around here have a 7 day guarantee.....if they die you bring them back.....i hate to say this but i dont think the store you bought them at is to blame....can you describe in detail what you have done with them when you got them home?

It sounds like you'd left them in their bag overnight?

To help we really need more information.
Things like
Quarentine tank size
Was the quarentine tank cycled so the filter could handle the new fish waste
Did you acclimatise the fish?
How long for?
And do you know the water stats of your quarentine tank?

If you can answer some or all of these questions we will be better able to help you

Thanks guys for the fast responses! No I didn't save the carcasses :/ and NO I DID NOT LEAVE THEM IN THE BAG OVERNIGHT! Their quarantine tank is a 5.5 aqueon.
The water was the same stats as the pet store's so no I wasn't too sure. There was no water to acclimatize because it WAS ONLY the pet store's water in the tank. The 10 gal was being heated and flittered overnight and I was going to start the cycling process today but now, there's no need.

Keeping the water from the store is NEVER a good idea. You always want to have clean, dechlorinated water ready for your fish before you bring them home. You should float the bag of fish in their new tank water for at least 15 mins. to let them acclimate to the temperature. Then  you want to open the bag and roll down the rim to make a float and float the open bag in the tank for another 15 mins while adding your clean tank water to the bagged water. After that net the fish and place them in the tank. The problem with store water is that it becomes toxic very quickly during transport due to the fish being stressed. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER keep the store water.

Also, check with your local lfs... perhaps they will replace the fish for you even if you don't have the bodies.

what filter is on the quarantine tank?

is that filter cycled?

Whenever I buy fish, the amount of water that is in the bag is minimal, just a few litres, not even a gallon. All the time that the fish are in the bag, they are stressed, and therefore producing more ammonia than they would when in a stressless environment.

So when you have released them into the quarantine tank, (which I'm assuming is 5½ gallons, rather than 5½ litres), it seems as though there is virtually no water in the tank - you said that it was only the pet store water in the tank.

If there's only a little amount of water, there would be no filtration, so you've got your fish just in the water that was in the bag. Unless you've got an air-driven sponge filter, but even then it would seem likely that there would be no bacteria in the sponge.

It sounds to me like the fish will have died from ammonia poisoning.

I know I've made a few assumptions there, so please feel free to to correct anything I've wrongly assumed.

Did you purchase reverse osmosis water from your LFS? If not, I'm not sure how you filled your tank with purely the water of your LFS.
