I'm In Love

I was just about to post and update before you posted Baccus!

My guy phoned last night he's getting a new batch in this morning he's going to pick me out three good ones and I've just to go collect them, one replacement and two as a good will gesture!

How fab is my LFS!!

So I'll be going to pick them up around dinnertime so fingers crossed these are OK! I've had no problems with my others so hopefully these will settle right in.

If I had the funds to do so I'd get another four to add to the group to make it up to 10 but unfortunately school uniforms wins out this week lol so a group of 6 will have to do for now, hopefully there will still be some left in a week or so.

But for now I'm more than happy with my condolence fish! :D

That's fantastic news!

What LFS do you use? Might try and encourage them to open a shop near me haha!

I have one more year before I have to get school uniform so might try to make the most of that situation lol

Sounds like you have a very good helpful LFS, lucky you

Once the corys have settled and matured a bit you could always have a crack at breeding them. Generally I have found the best way to get corys to spawn is too condition them with lots of defrosted live foods such as bloodworms, tubifex, and mosquito larva ( mine also enjoy getting live bloodworms and mosquito wrigglers too), then if possible do a large water change using cooler water than the usual tank temp. If you can do this in conjuntion with a large weather change/ front coming through, the corys should spawn.

After spawning I would advise removing the eggs other wise they will most likely be eaten either by other tank mates or the corys themselves. When hatching eggs I usually use a suspended net style baby/ fry saver set up near the filter return, add some moss or other live plants from the tank and let the eggs do their thing.

My LFS is fantastic, it's just a little independent store, it's been ran by the same family since it opened, and I've been going since I was a wee nipper with my dad and I'll be 30 next week! But the less said about that the better lol.

I got my little guys home, I'm just getting them settled before I add them.

I'd love to try and breed them, the fish get quite a varied diet as it is, I like to give them a mix, they get frozen, live, granular and a grazer and don't feed on water change day, I've just ordered some new era catfish pellets for the corys (I'm sure new era have just been bought out so have changed their name to vitalis or something similar)

I will definitely keep you all updated on any falsie fry! :D

So sorry you lost your little cory, hope the group fair well and reward you with Cory Suprises, like mine :). I am sure with your care and attention you will hopefully be duly rewarded. With Corys, you need more males than females, to assist in breeding. With my Aldofo I have just bought a few each time I see them, the ones I get now are so tiny that I cannot really sex them, but I have been lucky that I now have a mixed group of nine. Plus of course three of my Cory Surprises to add when old enough

Thankfully if I ever do branch out into lasers I can get either wild caught or tank bred, I think I would go tank bred over wild caught
Good plan Baccus. My first four Aldofo were lovely chunky fish, yet each morning following purchase another had passed until I was left with just the one! They were £20 each and the LFS did not offer anything for the losses stating others had been fine! They were sold very quickly and maybe they just did not want to admit anything!? They were added to a very mature and successful tank, so I now believe these had been wild caught, as they showed no sign of anything. Interestingly, the lone surviving female, started to lay eggs about a year later, she was in with Pandas at the time. She is still going strong and now living in my Juwel 180 with the others. I only keep the one species in there to prevent inter-breeding, and have been duly rewarded with fry recently.

How do you differentiate between male and female? At the moment mine are maybe an inch in length a couple slightly smaller, I know some say the females are slightly rounder?

Will it be easier to tell when they're a little bigger?

They're in my jewel rio180 with a few other fish, guppies, platies, tetras, (bentosi and neon) an albino plec and some GBRs would they not eat the eggs?

And wow £20 each for aldofo! I must admit I'd never heard of them till you mentioned them, luckily my little falsies are cheap enough at £4.50 each!

This sketch I made ages ago might help you to sex your corys rather than having to wait until they are full grown and the females are full of eggs.

Hmmmm thanks Baccus, I'll have a bash at sexing then later on, if they stay still long enough for me to get a good look!
