Ok, so at christmas my goldies are having a new 125l tank and leaving there 90l empty, i think im going to divide this tank into 3 have a section for angel a section for a male and in the middle of the female and male section i will have a breeding section. Or i may even go with the idea of 6 females and a comunity tank.
My mum has said i can do this just depends on what i want to do, i'd love to breed my female though as shes very pretty obviously i would research ALOT before going into breeding. Tell me what you think?

OMG! Until I say your sig, I thought shimmer was the betta in your display picture  I would split the 90l in 3 and have male, female sorority, male. The males would each have 20l and the sorority would have 50litres. Also, get rid of those goldfish and have a community. Or get some salt in yer blood :p

Thinking about it i could have 40l of it for 4 or 5 bettas 30l for a male betta on his on then 20l for the breeding bit for when they lay there eggs and hatch them.

Ahh right i like your idea! Yes, then i can have a smaller tank for the breeding!

I would go with tropicjohn suggestion hon, as you are going to need to separate ALL the male fry when they start fighting individually and keep them warm! Thats great news sweets xxx

and yes shimmer is in my dp and my sig, he changed very much after i got him and went a lovely blue colour :)

He looked gorgeous and yummy either way ;)

p.s. why oh why can't those males get on as a community of them would be stunning! They are too beautiful for their own good.

Maybe i wont go down the breeding line but i think i like the idea of 50l for about 6 female bettas with shrimp or soemthing then 20l for males. Although i'd probably like a little more for the males but i think that would be alright?.
and i know amy, they look so fab! Nearly got one today he was purple, blue, red and green stunning he was!

I don't know how many goldfish you have but you need approx 220 litres per pair as they grow to over a foot long . 125 L is nowhere near enough. It would be kinder to rehome them with someone who has space or build a pond. They are pond fish after all.

125 would make a good community tank or soroity though, and you could have an all male split tank with the 90 L. Planted up , the whole shebang could look stunning.

hi jas hun

20 l each for the boys and 50l for the girls would be perfect - you could have 5-6 girls in there just remember to have it well planted with lots of caves hun :)

someone is going to have to inseminate a female betta egg with some gourami sperm lol, then breed the female gourami x betta hybrids with male bettas until the hybrids aren't aggresive to other bettas and community fish :D.

even if the female was inseminated the sperm may be rejected, and if i recall correctly they have different numbers of chromosomes.

it would be an interesting concept though

gouramis are very very aggressive when breeding so that wouldnt help at all

Without the aggression in the bettas they would no longer flare , imbellis , rulitans etc dont flare very often and can share with the opposite sex fine

If they do that to gouramis and bettas they want shooting

or, breed betta imbellis with some wild caught plakats [closest type of splenden] and hopefully some of the aggresion should be lost. Betta imbenden :p

HoneyThorn, i dont understand where your coming from? Ive been told by alot of people that the 125l is absolutely great for those fish, just 2 fantail goldfish there not pond fish. On another coldwater fish forum i go on the rule on there is 40l per fish which is 80l then plus they have the extra space which is about another 20l because the other 25 takes up filter etc. I've had these fish a year and a half now and evr sicne i got them ive been upgradign tnaks after i uprgade to this 125l thats it its there last tank they can live there lives in it, many people have said it to me so im not quite understanding you here?
