I have two 10 gallon tanks, one is just horribly green...i can barely see the fish, not even able to see the other side of the tank.
the water is soo green, but there isn't any algae any where..just green water
i have 10guppies and a bristle nose pleco in there, and i really want to just throw it all out the window!!!!
i've tried ev erything!
i put towels around the tank for 50hours not letting any light in, that didn't work a bit.
then i bought these HAGEN green-X algea get ridder things those didn't seem to help either at all.
I do water changes as well! IT"S SO FRUSTERATING!!!!!!!!!!!!
please tell me what i can do!!!!
or buy something at least!!!
just nothing to expensive!
i just don't want to look at this tank anymore!!!!

How often do you do the water changes?
How much / what do you feed your fish?
How much water do you take out?

i do water changes probably about once a week...
about 20% or something close to that
i feed the fish flakes, and shrimp pellets
a pinch of flakes 1-2 times daily,
and 1 or 2 pellets 4/7days a week
i don't really know what materials are in my filters..
but one is called: Penguin, BIO-Wheel 150
the other is called: Aqua Clear 20

Did you try an algae medication that specifically cures green water? I had to make sure when i bought mine that it did, because otherwise it won't clear up your problem. Try looking at other algae meds and see if they work for you.

having so many fish might also be the reason why it dirties so fast. 10 guppies is a little much in a 10 gallon since they grow between 1 1/2 and 2 inches each and the rule is 1 inch per gallon of fish. Might not be since you've tried a lot of water changes.

I hope everything works out for you :good:

well, one tank has 10 guppies, the other on has 5
and it was the one with 5 guppies that was worse than the other...
so i don't think it has anything to do with the amount of fish there are in it.

hi tamara
you state that you feed 1-2 times a day. I'm thinking this is too much and the food is causing the algae problem.
I suggest that you feed every other day, at least until you have the green situation under control.

as for the hagen green-X they are for a long term solution, rather than a magic instant cure.

one other possible cause could be high levels of phosphate. take a sample to your LFS and ask then to test the ph04
for you, also take a sample of you tap water as ph04 can be coming directly out of your tapwater.

I hope you don't give up on this hobby, it is truly well worth all the hassel you have now.

green water is a form of algae you know

uv sterilisers are supposed to work wonders for it, can get fairly cheap ones from fleabay :good:

also, having your tank in direct sunlight can cause this. Hope you get tho the bottom of this don't give up!
